Coherence: An Approach to Representing Ethnographic Analyses in Systems Design

چکیده
This paper is concerned with how to represent in system design the kinds of features of work settings as reported by ethnographic studies of work. Various researchers and practitioners have found that ethnomethodological analyses of work settings can provide useful insights to the work processes and settings that system design is interested in. Previously at Lancaster, we have examined ways in which ethnography can be used in the design process, and how the results of ethnographic analyses can be presented in such a way as to be useful components of the design process. This paper reflects an effort to approach these methodological issues from a different perspective, by examining how the lessons learned from ethnographic studies can be reflected in the design process itself, and in particular how design artefacts (models, documents, etc.) can express the type of information which ethnographic studies produce. The paper focuses on how ethnographic analyses can influence the main representational artefact in systems design—the model of the system being developed. We examine how the Unified Modelling Language (UML) for object-oriented design can be used to express information about awareness in cooperative systems Prepared for HCI journal special issue on Representations in Interactive Systems Development 2 Coherence: an approach to representing ethnographic analyses in systems design Stephen Viller and Ian Sommerville Computing Department, Lancaster University Lancaster, LA1 4YR, UK {viller, is}@comp.lancs.ac.uk Abstract: This paper is concerned with how to represent in system design the kinds of features of work settings as reported by ethnographic studies of work. Exergy , economy and pressure drop analyses for optimal design of recuperator used in microturbine
The optimal design of a plate-fin recuperator of a 200-kW microturbine was studied in this paper. The exergy efficiency, pressure drop and total cost were selected as the three important objective functions of the recuperator. Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) were respectively employed for single-objective and multi-objective optimizations. By opt...

Evaluation plays an important role in interactive question answering systems like many computational linguistics fields. The coherence between the questions and the answers exchanged between the user and the system is one of the important criteria in evaluating these systems. In this paper, a new approach to determine the degree of coherence of generated text by the IQA systems is presented. Th...

Abstract One of the main concerns in educational settings has been the degree of the learners’ involvement in learning and the extent to which they actively participate in classroom talks and interactions. The present study is an emic-based ethnographic study aimed at providing insights about patterns of talk and different degrees of interaction in EFL university classes with a specific focus o...

متن کاملStudy on implementation of one-piece lean line design using simulation techniques: A practical approach
This paper discusses the simulation study carried out for proposing one-piece lean line layout with features of Lean Manufacturing. The lean initiatives that can be addressed are, introducing Kanban replenishment sys-tem, better work-in-process, changing the layout, visual management techniques, standardized work for the re-duction of cycle time, number of workers, number of setups. To improve ...
